Hunter caring for hunting gear, including boots and tents, in New Zealand

How to care for your hunting gear

Good gear is an investment - and like any investment, proper care and storage will pay off by extending its life and performance.

We’re pretty lucky here in New Zealand - the hunting never really stops. From chasing reds in the roar to high-country tahr or a cheeky spring hunt, we can get out in all seasons. That means our hunting gear in New Zealand cops a hammering and deserves a bit of love between trips. Whether it's New Zealand hunting clothes for all-season comfort or your trusted hunting apparel NZ, a little care can go a long way in maintaining peak performance.

Here’s how to keep your kit in top nick.

Tents - Dry, Loose Storage Is Key

After any trip, make sure your tent is fully dry before packing it away. Even a bit of moisture can lead to mildew, fabric rot, and peeling coatings.
Pitch it again at home or hang it in a breezy, shaded area to dry completely.
Wipe down tent poles and pegs to remove dirt, sap, or grit.
Store your tent loosely in a breathable bag instead of cramming it into a tight stuff sack - compression can stress seams and coatings.

Keep in mind that waterproof coatings naturally degrade over time, especially under our harsh NZ UV rays. A fresh DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating and some seam sealer when needed can do wonders for maintaining waterproof performance.

Sleeping Bags - Let Them Breathe

Sleeping bags need airflow just as much as you do after a long hunt.
Air out your bag well after every trip and make sure it’s completely bone dry before storing.
Store it loosely in a large mesh or cotton bag. This helps preserve the loft and warmth of the insulation.
Keep it in a cool, dry place - you don’t want to crush that filling over time.

Sleeping Mats - Don’t Forget These

Sleeping mats are easy to overlook, but poor storage can ruin them fast.
Wipe them clean to remove any grime or moisture.
Let them dry out completely before storing.
Avoid rolling too tight - keep them loosely rolled with valves open, stored in a cool, dry area.

Hunting Packs - Keep Them in Shape

If you rotate between an ultralight pack and a more heavy-duty one, don’t forget to show each a bit of care while they’re waiting their turn.
Loosen all straps and hip belts to avoid deforming the padding.
Check that it’s clean, dry, and empty (no one likes a rotten surprise left behind).
Whenever possible, hang your pack in a well-ventilated, dry space.

Puffer Jackets - Light, Warm, and Worth Protecting

Your puffer jacket deserves better than being crammed in a pack until next season.
Store it loosely on a hanger in a cool, dry place.
Air it out to remove trapped moisture.
Spot-clean with a mild detergent when needed - gentle care keeps those down or synthetic fibres in great shape.

Hunting Boots - Keep Them Supple and Waterproof

Your boots are probably your most important bit of kit - they carry you through it all. Regular care makes a massive difference.Brush off mud and dirt with a soft brush or damp cloth.Let them dry naturally away from direct sunlight, fires, or heaters.Once clean and dry, apply a leather conditioner or waterproofing treatment to keep them supple, prevent cracking, and help maintain waterproofing.
If they haven’t been out in a while, wear them for a short walk just to keep the leather moving.

Thermal Top Women's - Maintain Your Layers

Don’t forget your thermal top women’s or base layers. These garments need special attention to maintain their insulating properties.
Wash according to the label and make sure it’s dry before storing.
Avoid leaving it in direct sunlight as it can degrade fabric. Store it loosely to preserve its shape and function for your next hunting trip.

General Storage Tips for All Gear

Keep your hunting gear New Zealand in a cool, dry room - ideal for preventing damp and mildew.
Use containers or cupboards to stay organised for quick pack-ups and clean-outs.
Store gear off the floor on shelves, especially in garages or sheds, which can be prone to dampness.

Final Thoughts

Looking after your hunting apparel NZ isn’t just about tidiness - it’s about performance and reliability when you’re miles from anywhere. With a little regular maintenance and smart storage, your tents, boots, and sleeping gear will give you years of service in the rugged New Zealand outdoors.

Take care of your kit, and it’ll take care of you on your next hunt.
